You Might Be a Pharisee…
We are aware that this type of list has been done before, so just consider us the Thrift Store of the blogosphere – it’s new to us, so therefore it’s new.
- If you think missionary is a position or something that others are called to be, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you criticize others more than you serve others, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you think Disciple is only a Christian rock band, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you think Jesus might attend your church, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you are caught up in the legalism of the church and not the heart of Jesus, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you tell God what you want before listening to what he wants, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you know everything about the cross, except to stand at the foot of it, then you might be a Pharisee.
- If you think that any church that has experienced growth must be watering-down the Gospel, then you might be a Pharisee.
Thanks to the following blogs who blazed the trail for us – Gamaliels Desk, Post Millennialism, and Trey Morgan.

If you think the only music God listens to is 100 years old, then you might be a Pharisee.

Found this one on another blog…
If you are more concerned with who is waiting on the Lord’s Supper table and what they are wearing…. then you might be a Pharisee.

If your blog never offends church people, you might be a Pharisee.

Guilt on this one…
If you spend more time reading books about the Bible than you spend reading the Bible…

If you think you have it all figured out; No longer a student of your faith; No longer a student of your bible; there is no one in your life worthy to teach you something new about yourself; Nothing more that God can reveal to you, you might be a pharisee. And those folks can be found anywhere, in any church, in any pew, (or hard back chair).

If you condemn others for believing in the literal truth of the Bible and standing up for that “oldtruth”, you might be a Pharisee.

Ouch! Time to self examine one’s heart. Thankfully, we have Jesus to take our hearts to for the most accurate surgery possible.

“you might be a pharisee if you have oldtruth on your blogroll.”
Doh… God’s a pharisee!
It’s in his blogroll under the link: Isaiah 46:9
“remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,”
I guess God is into “old truth”…

God is a pharisee? Dude…
you might be a pharisee if you don’t read this passage at least once a week…
37″Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
39He also told them this parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
41″Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
all you “old timers” there is this thing called the New Testament. Starts in Matthew I think it reads better if you get out of KJV you might try The Message…whoa did that fire anybody up?! …there is another you might be a pharisee…oh yeah one more you might be a pharisee …if you think your eyes are clear!

i love matthew even though this isn’t his account. what a fine line to avoid external examinations of others yet being mindful that he tells us later in chapter 7 that our actions reveal our character, and we need self-examination.
and all of this coming under a rebuke of sorts. only our heart, which god knows, is the measure of whether we addressed sin in someone else’s life from a place of love or examination.
good thoughts wa…

“oh yeah one more you might be a pharisee …if you think your eyes are clear!”
doh… Paul is a pharisee too…
Timothy 3:9
They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.
2Corinthians 1:12
Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace.
I’m just aying…

As much fun as it is reading you guys going round-and-round, I believe that “Craig,” who posted that “you might be a pharisee if you have oldtruth on your blogroll,” was referring to an actual blog – oldtruth, which is a very conservative religious blog.
June 6, 2008 at 7:31 am
Ahh…
but the idea still fits sometimes…I think…
Correct me if I’m wrong, I have never visited that blog…
June 6, 2008 at 8:18 am
Yeah…the analogy still has legs, but I just didn’t want you guys thinking that Craig meant “old truth” in the biblical sense.
You should visit the blog. They actually a lot of good things to say.

Thanks guys lots of good ones. How about: you might be a pharisee if you spend too much time looking at yourself? (it often leads on to ‘thank you God for making me not like the other fella’)
